I Don’t Regret Spending $8,000 on a Point-and-Shoot Leica. Here’s Why

About a year ago, in November 2021, I spent my own money £ 6,000 (about 8,100) on a Laika Q3 43. For the past 11 months, it was with me numerous trips across the UK and Europe and I shot more than 40,000 photos, including street photography, travel, landscapes and even big editorial features. I’ve got some thoughts about this type of premium compact and hope some of the hard shopping suggestions, you are considering this camera or any other compact like the ever-popular Fuji X100vi.

Let’s dive.

I took more than 25,000 pictures with my new Liker. These are my favorite

I bought Lyka Q3 43 at full retail prices with my own money, which was only shy £ 6,000 at that time – well, okay over I also ordered with the second battery. It is a lot of money, especially when the purse strings are tightening and doing big shopping-especially non-need for non-need-like it.

So, why do I want it?

Okay, a number of reasons, and I hope any photographers there will understand this, whether Laika fans or not. In recent years, I have found myself a little more surrounded by a gear that I have earned professionally in 13 years. Many bags, tripods, lenses, lens adapters-whatever-and I want to take more stripped-back methods in most cases of my photography.

For years, I used Sony RX1 RK as a compact, “Take somewhere” camera when I don’t want to take a full bag of kit. It is a stunning little full-frame premium compact that takes beautiful photos with a fixed 35mm lens. However it is now 12 years old, and it shows the age of slow, incredible autofocus, relatively low resolution and Seriously, There is no viewfinder, so you need to shoot using the original screen and you will look like a tourist. I spent a few years in the hope that Sony will replace it and Although it is the end of itI’ve already bought in love with my new Liker. Sorry Sony, you snooze, you lost.

Q3 43 Street and Documentary Photography comes into its own as a daily Carrie camera

Q3 43 is in some ways my RX 1 and its spiritual successor. It has a fantastic full-frame sensor with high quality fixed lenses. It takes a stunning figure and I can always carry it with me with me, it jumps on my neck, is ready to shoot whenever I see a chance.

It has a fixed 43mm lens, which may not be suitable for everyone, but this is ideal for most of my work. I usually jump into 35 mm and 50 mm focal lengths, so I never found a limited sweet spot between the 43mm that I have captured with it. I tried the 28 mm version of the camera and did not proceed with its wide-angle scene.

I recently wrote about three types of camera photographers, which includes workhors, a daily carrying and more artistic options and when Q3 43 was absolutely three for me, this is the second point where I think it has the most impact on me. It’s not a camera that I had to pay an allowance when I carry me around. I don’t need any big photography backpack, just a small sling or messenger bag. Sometimes I have even gone out with it without a bag on my neck.

I always like to hold a camera with me. It is true that the best camera is with you it is twice the case if you are always with you then it is always if it is always In fact The best camera. Well, it’s not as young as my Sony RX 1 R, but it is smaller than my cannon r5 and the latest X2D II of the Haselblad and it was a great companion Photos around StockholmEdinburg and BarcelonaThe It is a joy to quickly lift it up and fire it.

Being ready to go the camera always means I can capture these national moments quickly.

It is easy to handle that it helps. I shoot in most aperture priorities, when I want to adjust the depth of the field, the dedicated aperture ring on the lens wrap the ring. I put it in the most ISO 400 and the camera is always good for the scene that I am capturing in the scene that I have to speed me the right shutter.

At night, I have to crink tightly, especially since the camera does not have a stable image sensor like 5. In fact, at the technical level, Q3 43 does not give super good shape, its explosion rate and autofocus are both slower than rivals. Its subject identification is also best described as “hit or miss”.

It was great to use Laika Q3 43 in Sweden. Its smaller size has always made me easier to be with me.

However Why I like this camera. I don’t have to dive into the infinite abdominal cavity of the setting menu to find out various autofocus options. I just focus on this camera at a single point, I half-pressed the shutter to focus on what I want and then rebuild the shot. Or I’ll manually focus on. This is a more preliminary shooting experience that makes me think more about the shot that is taking me and encourages me to think less about the settings that I am using to get.

Then there is a built-in color profile profile offer, which I love absolutely. I shoot almost everything using the Liker Chrome look, which works with the colors and the contrary which I am obsessed. I’ve mostly associated it with a warm white balance and more recently, k Polarpro gold fog filter, Which gives my images a warm, film siblings that I like. This filter almost never leaves my camera and this is definitely a must for me.

I like the tunes that the camera can achieve, so that almost no post is processing.

In fact, I have shot most of my photos now in JPG and use them without almost any post-processing. This is completely contrary to the method of working with my R5 – I just shot raw in that camera and all my images are working on some levels in the lighroom. I want Lyka to provide these profiles options to make more cameras? Absolutely

I consider Q3 43K as the classic point-and-shoot compact camera. I am leaning on the color of the camera to reduce the edits stuck in my time, use the basic settings to shoot quickly and creatively. It has offered me a different way to work and I have fully enjoyed the moment I spent with this camera so far. Actually I am currently shortlisted In the four sections of the British Photography Award – three of them shot at Q3 43.

Q3 43 is small, but Sony’s full frame is smaller than RX 1 and smaller.

Andrew Lanceson/CNET

Frankly, this is not just Lika Q3 43 that can give you it. Fujifilm has a social media darling for the compact size and customized film emulation modes of the Fujifilm, while on the other hand, the Ricoh is admired by street and travel photographers for Greei’s quality and pocketable size mixture. I have considered the purchase of X100vi instead of Laker, but I will be truthful, there is another element that I am less proud to admit.

I Wanted A Laika

I don’t like to think of myself as a status symbol and I have no desire for Rolex, a yacht or lambo on my drive (okay, probably somewhat), I have always dreamed of ownership of a camera that the iconic red dot play on the front. I am concerned that it may be a fancy that stops quickly, but it didn’t – I still feel excited to pick it up and take it somewhere. It also helps that the hard metallic construction of Q3 43 feels infinite premium than the lightweight of X100vi, arguably quite plastic feeling.

I used Q3 43 for a wedding shot in the summer and I liked the photos I got with it – such as bride and groom.

Andrew Lanceson/CNET

It gives me a creative rumor that I really don’t get from my canon anymore. To lean on an analogy that I used earlier, and 5 a laborer van; Practical, it ticks the boxes that they need to do any work. A professional tool for things to complete. However, it is not the car they imagine about driving along the coast. Laika is a fantasy car. A classic Ferrari, probably. It does the same thing technically mostly but it does it in a very different way that makes you feel significantly different when you use it.

A general setting format.

Andrew Lanceson/CNET

It can be a lot of money to spend on a camera, especially one that I am not strictly guys NeedThe It helped that the UK Laika provides interest -free credit credit, so I have spread more than 12 months instead of cash at once. But it means me – and still I’m – happy to spend.

It gave my photography an encouragement that I didn’t know I needed. I had almost a year now and I feel that I am more evolving as a photographer at that time and took different types of images for whom I am incredibly proud of. I can’t wait to see what the next years will bring up with it.
