Oh, it’s turned on. Today Connection: Sports version There is one of those classic purple categories where you need to make a riot with a letter to create the connection. If you’re fighting still want to solve it then read for hints and answers.
Connects: The Sports version is published by athletic, the Times-owned subscription-based sports journalism site. It does not appear in the NYT Games app but appears on Athletic’s own application. Or you can play it online for free.

Hints for today’s connections: Sports version groups
There are four hints for grouping in today’s connections: the Sports version is the puzzle, the easiest yellow group is tough (and sometimes bizarre) in the purple group.
