Scouts no longer tie knots and build bonfires. Scouting America has added two merit badges to its lineup, and it looks like the 115-year-old organization’s awards are getting modernized. Scouts can now earn badges Artificial intelligence and cyber security.
Scouts Can Now Earn AI
Scouting America is the youth organization known as the Boy Scouts until 2019, when it changed its name to Scouts BSA and allowed girls to join the all-girl troop. In February, the Scouts BSA changed its name again, this time to Scouting America.

D AI Merit Badge According to the Scouting of America website, “will introduce Scouts to the fundamentals of AI and automation through hands-on activities and real-world examples.” Cyber Security Merit Badge “Equipping Scouts with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate and protect the digital world.”
While many of the merit badges seen on individual Scouts’ recognition sashes focus on hands-on experience, often outdoors, such as fire safety and pest study, Scouting America says the new additions are relevant to modern life.
“Both badges focus on real-world practice, not just reading about technology,” Scouting America in a statement. “The AI Badge makes Scouts think about how to use technology responsibly. The Cyber Security Badge teaches real safety skills along with safe online habits.”
Scouting America has added another modern twist. The company recently released a AI chatbot called Scoutly Which may share different merit badge requirements among other jobs. Scouts can earn more than 130 badges in a variety of subjects.
