Although the name is in keeping with the city’s weather-related women’s sports brands — Storm, Rain — in a tech town, our immediate thoughts on Torrent turned to something else: file sharing.

Torrenting gained popularity in the 2000s as a way to download content — such as music or movies — using peer-to-peer networks. Technology has encouraged the sharing of copyrighted material without permission, which is considered illegal in many places.

According to the PWHL, the league led the design process for Seattle’s team identity and collaborated with creative agency Flower Shop for the name and logo.

Torrent will play home games at Climate Pledge Arena, home of the Seattle Kraken NHL team.

Vancouver, BC now joins Seattle as a PWHL expansion team in the eight-team league. The city went with it “Goldeyes” as the team name.. Maybe a James Bond reference would work there.

Other teams in the league include the Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Montreal Victories, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge and Toronto Cyceptres.

Seattle opens its regular season schedule November 21 in Vancouver.
