Both the iPhone 16 Pro still packs an incredible camera setup for images and video production-with fun 4K slow-motion mode. But to help capture the Pro-Standard Video Footage, it supports the log-color shooting with Apple Prorse encoding, just as the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max did before. It can sound like a wonderful string of jargon (because it), so if you are not a professional video producer, it is true that it is true that it just lets you just shoot a professional look cinematic video footage using your iPhone.

But what does the word log and prorses mean? How are these better than regular videos on your phone? And, seriously, should you actually use them when recording your own videos? Here is what you should know to get the best video quality on the iPhone.

What is the prone?

Prorses is a video codec created by Apple in 2007 that is widely accepted by video and movie professionals. Usually available on high-end video cameras that spend thousands of dollars, prost files capture more data while shooting, resulting in you usually create better quality footage than you get from a phone or even some dedicated camera.

What is the log video?

Log (short for “logarithmic”) is a colorful profile found in some professional video cameras and is now available on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max (including the growing number of Android phones with the Galaxy S 25 Ultra). The log footage preserves more image information in the highlights and the shade, when the color edits in the post production and the contrast allow for greater flexibility.

How do you turn on the Prore and Log Video?

On your iPhone 16 Pro or 15 Pro, then go to Settings, then scroll down and tap CameraThe Then tap FormatAnd in this sub-menu you will see a category Capture of the videoThe Toggle Apple Will be on and below the alternative Prone encodingThe It lets switch to you to switch into it HDR, SDR Or LogThe

Keep in mind that you can toggle or turn off the prorses directly to the camera app, if you want to switch HDR or vice versa from the log, you need to go back to the setting app. You can shoot 4K footage per second on the phone, but if you want to shoot in 60 frames per second, you need to connect an external SSD drive via USB-C and record it directly with it. When you can shoot Pro footage without logs, you can simply log with the pro.

Why is the log video gray and washed?

Log files look straight out of the camera and have less contrast and low saturation. The files are designed to edit programs like Adobe Premier or Davinchi Resolution, where the colorful ones will bring the opposite and colorful tune to the color grading, according to the color they want to achieve.

The Low-Cantrust appearance of the agraded footage gives the best starting point to tweet the video image of the colorful but they want. Log footage needs to always be edited and graded before use.

How do I edit the log video?

Although Apple has not yet applied the color editing tools for log footage on the iPhone (which should be it), you can find some ways using exposure tools in the ‘Editing’ option in the photo app. However, you will get your best results by transferring files to your iPad, Mac or Windows PC and editing on dedicated video manufacturing applications.

My favorite is Blackmagic by Rezlev Devichin, which is an art-standard piece of software used in professional production and Hollywood films. It is known for flexibility with color editing and I like to use it to see what IPhone 15 Pro Max and Blackmagic’s own pocket movie camera can get from video footage from both.

The Daviech solution on the desktop may seem terrifying but its colorful grading equipment makes it an art standard piece of software.

The solution is available on Mac and PCs but there is also a great iPad application version here. After all, the software is free to use on all platforms, only the studio version is required to pay with some advanced features. However, anyone who wants to spice their footage will find the free version more than capable.

Blackmagic iPad has also launched a color-editing panel designed to use it. The Micro color panel The solution gives you the fine grain control over color editing and allows you to edit your footage quickly using the same Pro hardware used in Hollywood movies.

Can my phone shoot prorses log video?

Apple has introduced the ability to shoot with Prors Codec on the IPhone 12 Pro, but now only the recent iPhone 16 Pro, Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max log.

Do you need to use the iPhone Camera app to shoot Prors Log Video?

No, Apple has opened this feature to third party applications. My recommendation is the Blackmagic Camera App, which gives the same level of control over the settings as you find in professional cameras in the company. It’s free like a great tool for getting the most face video from your phone.

Shall I shoot videos in the prone log?

Prors footage in the log profile is very specialized. It requires additional time in post production to paint the footage grade and file size is much larger than regular video files. If you want to upload your family to the beach or shoot footage of your spouse to upload to Instagram or YouTube, you don’t need to worry about your pro or log.

However, if you want to use your iPhone 16 Pro professional video production tool and your grade is colorful and you have time and resources to edit your footage, you should be given it absolutely. Recording flexibility allows you to get video out of your iPhone that gives dedicated cinema cameras a run for their money and it creates an exceptional strong camera for content manufacturers to add some professional flair to their videos to the iPhone 16 Pro.
