New York City controllers have increased Wemo’s autonomous vehicle examination by the end of the year, the company reported on Wednesday.

Wemo was first allowed in August to allow his Robotaxis test in the city until the end of September. The terms of the extended permit are the same: Wemo can place his eight Jaguar I-Pace Vehicles in Manhattan and a human protection operator behind the wheel in the suburbs Brooklyn. A spokesman for Weemo says the permit relieves the company’s drivers from the New York rules that they always put on one hand cycle.

Wemor Permit Extension indicates that it is moving towards becoming the first AV company to launch a Robotaxi service on the chaotic and dense road of NWC. The company currently operates a commercial service in San Francisco, Austin, Atlanta, Phoenix and Los Angeles and plans to open to the public in Miami, Washington, DC, Dallas, Denver and Nashville the following year.

As a sponsor of autonomous vehicles at the state level, I encourage us to go ahead with the New York City Exam that shows us how this technology can improve, reduce traffic and expand mobility,” Assembly Bryan Cunningham says in a statement. “It allows us to prepare for the future while ensuring that progress works for New Yorkers.”

Nevertheless, Wemor has a long way to go to NWC-a city where the alphabet-owned company has been trying to operate since 2021. Even with this permission, the Wemo cannot afford to carry passengers or manage commercial robotuxi services without getting a separate license from the city taxi and limousine commission. A spokeswoman for Wemo refuses to comment on whether the company is in the discussion to apply for these licenses. TechCrunch AV has arrived at TLC to find out more about the requirements of companies.

Another obstacle is that there is no permitted structure in New York that lets Wemo or any other AV company to test or deploy robotaxis without any human security driver. While The law has been introduced To create a structure for a driverless operation, nothing has been passed on the law yet.
