For as long as I can remember, I’ve had trouble sleeping. When I lie down, my mind inevitably starts racing a thousand miles an hour, thinking about anything and everything.

On several recent nights, though, my bedtime thoughts have been singularly focused. I thought about possibilities like, “What if I fuse a ball that heals my character that splits into smaller balls with the same effect and add a passive that fires a baby ball every time it heals?” Then I grab my PlayStation Portal and do this until I fall asleep. This hold Ball x Pete I have it on.

Kenny Sun and a small team of collaborators have created a fascinating brick-broken Rogulite. Ball x Pete It’s a mix of dual-stick shoot-’em-up action, base building, and a dozen other things that keep me calling for another run… and another and another.

After a cataclysmic event wipes out the city of Balbilon and leaves a giant crater, hunters descend into the depths in search of treasure. For our purposes, this means playing levels to gather resources to build new ballylon structures These buildings unlock perks, such as new characters, that help in future runs. The level’s morbid chaos and cool city-building aspects feed into each other smartly and combine for a satisfying loop.

This is not the only important interplay here. Like any good Roguelite, Ball x Pete All about finding combinations for maximum effect. It’s right there in the title, where the “x” denotes a relationship between two things (it derives from shipping in fandom parlance).

In the pit, you fight monsters — surprise! – Shooting at them. Along with regular “Baby Balls”, each character has a unique ability and a special starter ball. in its vein Vampire SurvivorsAs you collect enough gems to level up you’ll unlock more special powers and passive abilities. One ball has a chance to freeze enemies and the other is slower but does a lot more damage. There are dozens more.

The real fun comes when you start combining these balls and their effects, freeing up space for other weapons. It’s even better when you’re able to evolve a pair of balls into something new. It is possible to fuse the evolved balls or even re-evolve them. There’s a strategic aspect to this, as you don’t want to fuse balls that can almost cancel each other out, such as combining an area-of-effect ball that disappears on impact, or leaving yourself with too few balls in danger.

Once I unlocked the option to take two characters on a run and combine their passive abilities, that’s where things went into overdrive. At this point the possibilities became very exciting and I ended the game Ball x Pete As a result my ideal bedtime is exceeded.

It takes a while to get to that point though. Progress is slow at first. Repetitiveness can be a bit much as you have to beat each stage multiple times before moving on to the next one. Also, I wish there was more to the game narratively than just a basic setup and some character descriptions.

But there’s so much to consider on every run, and that’s what keeps me coming back. Each of the nine levels is set in a different biome, with its own dangers, enemies and bosses. Some late-game characters turn the game on its head by changing playstyles in surprising ways, but I don’t want to spoil them. Along with the sheer chaos and dopamine hit of slicing through enemies, discovering killer combinations between characters, special powers – especially evolutions – and passives add to the joy of this game.

Whenever you fuse or evolve a pair of balls, instead of clicking an “OK” button to return to the action, the prompt is “Oops.” It’s on the nose, but funny. And I’ll be damned if I didn’t say that out loud many times when I saw what a newly evolved ball could do.

Ball x Pete is out now steam$15 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch. It is available through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is coming later this fall with a free upgrade from the Switch version
