Wemo is being expanded In London, self-driving vehicles developer announced on Wednesday. The Google Sister Organization aims to start service next year, when the UK government planned to allow autonomous vehicles to start working on the road in limited pilot programs. Wemo says that it is working with the government to get the permissions needed to launch it.
This is only Wemor’s second initiative outside the United States – though it can be the first international robotaxi service. The company is experimenting with robotaxis in Tokyo From AprilWhere it works with Japanese taxi company Nihan Kotsu, whose drivers are helping to collect WiMo maps and driving data from the city, and the Japanese ride-home farm go. However, the company will not say when or if it plans to launch an autonomous taxi in Japan.
London can still prove the company’s largest challenge. Robotaxis Are Coming
Wemo operates taxi services in five US cities: Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin and Atlanta. (It operates the next two services through the Uber app.) It announced plans to launch Dallas, Miami, Washington, DC and Nashville the following year. It has also been allowed to test autonomous vehicles in New York City, though it has to be done with the protective driver behind the wheel. The agency says it has provided more than ten million paid rides since its first customer lifted in 2020.
The move by Wemor this spring has followed the UK government’s announcement that it plans to allow autonomous vehicles on public roads for more than a year. The government will now start allowing the operating Robotaxis in a small number of starting in 2026.
Government officials are planning to spend almost a year to study the data that these vehicles produce in the second half before the driverless taxi services are further launched in 2027. Homegrown British autonomous vehicle developer Wave has already announced that it will work with Uber to manage Robotaxis in London.
