Protective researchers say Apple has notified more than a dozen Iranians in recent months that their iPhones were targeted with government spyware.

“Two people from Iran have come from a family with a long history of political activism against the Islamic Republic. Many members of their family have been executed, and they have no history of travel abroad,” Amir Rashidi, director of the Mian Group, told Techchen, director of the Mian Group. “I believe that three waves have been attacked here, and we just saw the tip of the iceberg.”

Kashfi, who founded the security agency Darksel, said in an email that he helped the two victims go through the primary forensic action, but he was not able to confirm what was behind the Spyware maker attack. It is unclear what spyware manufacturers are behind these attacks.
Over the past few years, Apple has sent various notifications to people who believe that the NSO group has been targeted with government spyware such as Pegasus or Paragon graphite. This type of malware is also known as “tenant” or “commercial” spyware.
Notifications have assisted researchers who focus on spyware to enroll in several countries like India, El Salvador and Thailand.

Apple did not respond to any request to comment on the notifications sent to the Iranians.
