Starbase hires Cameron County to police its streets and jail its offenders

Starbase is a city without a police department, but not without police.

For months, the Cameron County Sheriff’s deputies patrolled the roads and beaches around SpaceX facilities in South Texas. Now, less than a year after voting for Starbase residents, the city has signed these deputy as a destination for any person arrested in its D Facto Police Force and Cameron County Jail in the city border.

Two interlocala deals, approved in September and starting from Wednesday, flushing. One needs Cameron County to sacrifice eight deputy in Starbes, though only both will patrol the city in a single shift.

Others provide “gel service” on Cameron County, who agrees to pay $ 100 per day with Starbus and pay for the extra expense of the county, such as treatment for prisoners for treatment or psychiatrist services.

This is a way to stand in a criminal judicial system overnight without creating one from scratch. This type of system is not heard in Texas, especially for countless small or new cities that may not be able to stand a full police department on their own.

However, Starbes is not a common city. The population is small, and most residents work for SpaceX. The City itself was finalized only after the SpaceX Boca Chika bought the old property in Village and its introduction-and-production activities were finalized only after the spread.

The law enforcement contract just set up more than routine patrols. Starbase may also choose to pay for protection during “special events” – probably rocket launches, when thousands of spectators come down to see the spectacular aircraft of Starships, the small beach city comes down.

This genre of additional police permits for special events is an intelligent step, and it is not Starbase any traditional tait municipality, but a company built around a company: Starship flying – frequently strengthens this idea.

The deal strengthens this fact. Although Starbes has its own mayor and commissioner, public safety is governed by Cameron County. Body camera footage and other records remain near the county according to the contract and Starbase residents who have problems with local policing will have to be taken with their neighbors next to them.
