Verizon is laying off about 168 workers in Washington state, including analysts, engineers and retail staff.
Truncation is expressed in a Workforce Adjustment and Retraining Notice (Caution) Filed with the state Department of Employment Security. The jobs are due to end on January 23.
“Verizon is consolidating and restructuring its operations to maximize the company’s benefits and resources,” Eboni Gregoire, Verizon’s director of HR operations, said in a warning letter.
Verizon layoffs
Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that New York-based Verizon plans to cut 15,000 jobs, primarily through layoffs. This includes shifting about 200 of its stores to franchised outlets, which removes employees from the telecom’s payroll.
The warning letter said the five facilities — in Redmond, Renton, Woodinville, Spokane and Bellingham — were “being transferred to an agent” and would no longer be operated by Verizon. It was unclear whether the sites would be closed or franchised.
About 22 workers have been laid off at a corporate office in Bellevue, Wash., that Verizon acquired from rival T-Mobile last year. Verizon lost 7,000 phone customers in the most recent quarter, while AT&T and T-Mobile were adding customers, the WSJ reported. Thursday, T-Mobile announcement A “Switching Made Easy” initiative will launch next month to help Verizon and AT&T customers switch to T-Mobile in 15 minutes.
